Cynthia Shawamreh practices law as a senior counsel for the City of Chicago Department of Law, Finance and Economic Development Division, where she specializes in multi-layered financing transactions designed to provide affordable housing and economic incentives to stimulate job creation. Ms. Shawamreh has taught a course as an Autumn Quarter Lecturer in Law at The University of Chicago Law School each fall since 2008. She has taught Islamic Law and Finance, Introduction to Islamic Law, and Law, Politics, Economics and the Making of the Modern Middle East, each of which has been cross-listed in various departments of The University of Chicago.
In 2012, Ms. Shawamreh published an article entitled “Islamic Legal Theory and the Context of Islamist Movements” in the Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law. In 2013, Ms. Shawamreh contributed a chapter entitled “The Legal Framework of Islamic Finance” to the book Contemporary Islamic Finance: Innovations, Applications and Best Practices, edited by Karen Hunt-Ahmed and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Ms. Shawamreh is currently the co-chair of the Subcommitte on Hate Crimes and Discrimination Against Religious Institutions for the Illinois Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Her practice and research interests center on sustainable and ethical development in the global economy.
